Laikipia Chess Tournament

On Saturday, the 8th of March, 12 students from the Ol Jogi Chess Club went to the Laikipia regional tournament at the Three Rivers Academy. This tournament gave the opportunity to qualify for the Kenyan national tournament. Two students from the scholarship, Agnes and Stephen, were part of the OJ Chess Club team.

Overall, the tournament was a success for the students. All of them improved or met their previous performance and two of them even received medals: Dorcas with bronze in the U17 girls and Raymond also with bronze in the U11 boys category. Stephen got four points out of six and Agnes reached three points. Below you will find personal reports from Mr Ambrose, Agnes, Raymond and Stephen.

Mr Ambrose
First, I saw a significant improvement in our students compared to last year. Seeing them apply what they had learned and perform better was very rewarding. However,I realized that making illegal moves was still a common challenge, indicating that we need to focus more on rule awareness in our training sessions.

Secondly, I observed how different students reacted under pressure. Some were confident and composed, while others struggled with nerves. I worked to re assure them by reminding them to take their time and think through their moves carefully. Currently am planning with the help of our founder Alex to incorporate more practice games under which all students should apply the rules (mostly on illegal moves)learnt in the tournament

Lastly, I learned that beyond just playing chess, these tournaments are a great way for students to build resilience, patience, and strategic thinking. It was fulfilling to see them support and learn from each other. As we prepare for the national competition, I will focus on improving their rule mastery and confidence to ensure they perform even better.

Thank you

Agnes
On Saturday we entered the Ol Jogi Van and started our journey. When we were on our way to the three rivers academy I saw many buidlings, short and tall.

We arrived at the three rivers academy and were so happy. Everybody went and greeted his or her friends. We were so happy to be there and to see our friends. I have two friends who bought cake for me. The small calke was so sweet.

We started playing chess. The first round I won and I was so happy. Everybody won the first round, except for Stacy. We started playing round two. I didn’t win and I was so sad to lose that game. I even lost rounds three and four but won rounds five and six. That game in round 6 was so smart. We were so happy to visit that place and walked around the school.

Raymond
This weekend we went to a Chess tournament at Three River’s. I was very scared when i saw the people but Mr Ambrose told me “do not tense, you are playing under 11”. Then he told me breath in out and I felt well.

I started my first game. I played with a girl and I remembered Mr ambrose told me to breath in and out and I beat that girl. I thought that girl was tough. I won all games and only lost lost one game because of an illegal move. That’s what I learned at Three river’s. That was the fourth game. I won 5 games out of 6 games. I felt awesome of my self and I was proud.

Mr Ambrose told us when you get 4 to 6 you are going for national.
I knew that I was going for national.

Stephen
I woke up early in the morning as we were told by Mr. Ambrose. I organised my things that I needed for the day, including my snacks. I went to school at 6:55am. I found Mr. Ambrose waiting for as at the school. We waited for the students from main house to come. When they came we started our jounrey and arrived at 8:20.

We removed our sweaters and went to the hall where we were playing chess. When the order of playing came out we started playing and I won the first game. Then I learnt a lesson on the second and last game. I was very happy to win 4 games and I knew that I am qualified for the nationals in Nairobi on the 4/4/2025. The day was very fine and good.
